Gran Canaria is one of the seven islands that
make up the Spanish owned Canary archipelago situated off the west
coast of Africa. It is almost perfectly circular and is special because
of its amazing diversity in contrasting landscape with European, African
and even American vegetation which gave rise to its nickname “the
miniature continent”. Dry, arid areas bare of water or vegetation
lie minutes away from lush green mountains, majestic sheer cliffs form
the back drop of magnificent stretches of sandy beaches and deep ravines
and gorges are filled with sweet smelling banana trees. There are very
few places on Earth that have so many different contrasting landscapes
and even climatical zones in such a limited space as you find here.
Gran Canaria is a popular resort for many reasons
not least of which are its numerous and exquisite beaches. Most of
Gran Canarias beaches have white sand and some are even completely
unique in the world. Gran Canaria's coastline consists of 60 kilometres
of beaches of various descriptions, some forming part of protected
areas recognised for their natural beauty and unspoilt landscapes.
Gran Canaria’s beaches have become well known for the transparency
of their waters, their general cleanliness and the excellent facilities
provided for bathers.
Gran Canaria enjoys an all year round spring climate
with average annual temperatures of between 18C and 25C. However, the
unusual structure of Gran Canaria has created a great variety of microclimates
and while the climate is dry and sunny almost all year round in the
coastal regions, as you move up the central mountain to higher altitudes
where the influence of the sea is reduced and the clouds are retained
by the mountains great variations in temperature are experienced. It
is not uncommon for people to go sunbathing on the beach and then go
to play in the snow on the mountain tops an hour's drive later.
With the advent of many tour operators offering
cheap deals on holidays and flights to Gran Canaria departing from
most UK airports the island is becoming ever more popular. |
