More About Maspalomas, Gran Canaria
The Canary Islands are a group of seven islands situated 150 km off
the coast of the Western Sahara in the Atlantic Ocean. Gran Canaria is
the third largest, and although its neighbouring islands of Tenerife
and Fuerteventura are larger in size, Gran Canaria does have the largest
population.
Gran Canaria is often referred to as a mini continent. This is not
just because of its geographical situation between the 3 continents of
Africa, Europe and the Americas, but also because of the large variation
in weather and the different flora and fauna that can be found on the
island itself.
The resorts along the warm and sunny southern coast of Gran Canaria
are the busiest. The most popular of these are San
Agustin, Playa
del Ingles, Puerto
Rico and Maspalomas.
Famous for its tourism, hotels, beaches, dunes, apartments and other
facilities including restaurants, bars, taverns, shopping centres, souvenirs
and businesses, Maspalomas on the south east coast of Gran Canaria is
a thriving tourist resort that offers the visitor a range of entertainment
options.
The beach at Maspalomas "Playa de Maspalomas" is a 10km-long
stretch of golden sand that has been awarded an EU "Blue Flag"
category in recognition of the quality of its waters, the general cleanliness
of the beach and the large range of facilities available. This beach
is cleaned daily and there are lifeguards, private beach clubs, water
sports facilities as well as medical centres, bars and sun beds and parasols
for hire.
The area of Maspalomas is home to one of the islands biggest treasures,
that of the Dunes Nature Reserve (a protected natural heritage site).
This reserve is a protected area of more than 4000 hectares with rolling
dunes, a large lagoon, marshlands and a palm fringed oasis filled with
a wide range of wildlife such as sand lizards and rabbits.
Maspalomas does have a lot more to offer than a day by the sea, although
if that's your plan, this is the ideal place. Other attractions
here include a lighthouse that sits on the very furthest tip of Europe,
water sports, an impressive array of bars, restaurants and night clubs
to keep you entertained and of course one of the most important golf
courses on the island, the Maspalomas golf course.
